Your health data, fitness metrics, and journal entries are among the most sensitive information you generate. They reveal your mental state, your relationships, your fears, your coping mechanisms. And yet, most people give it away without a second thought. They download a wellness app, pour their hearts into it, and never read the privacy policy.

What Most Apps Do
A 2023 investigation by Mozilla's *Privacy Not Included project reviewed 32 mental health and wellness apps. The findings were grim.
28 out of 32 apps failed to meet Mozilla's minimum privacy standards. The most common issues: sharing data with third parties, using data for advertising, and retaining data indefinitely with no clear deletion path.
Several popular meditation and journaling apps share anonymized (but often re-identifiable) user data with analytics firms. Your journal entry about your divorce might not have your name attached. But combined with your device ID, location, and usage patterns, anonymized data can be traced back to you with surprising accuracy.
Some apps reserve the right to use your entries to train AI models. Your most private thoughts becoming training data for a language model. Read that sentence again.
The privacy policies that govern these practices are typically 4,000 to 8,000 words of dense legal text. They're designed to be technically accurate and practically unreadable. The result: informed consent that isn't informed.
The Business Model Problem
This isn't a technology problem. It's a business model problem.
Free wellness apps need to make money somehow. If you're not paying for the product, the product is your data. This is true across consumer tech, but it's especially troubling when the data in question is your emotional life.
Even paid apps aren't immune. Some subscription-based wellness platforms still reserve broad rights over your data. Paying for an app doesn't guarantee your data stays private. It just means the company has two revenue streams instead of one.
The fundamental tension: building AI features requires data. Better AI requires more data. The incentive to use your journal entries for model training is enormous, especially for companies under pressure to improve their product or demonstrate value to investors.
What Encryption Actually Means
"Encrypted" is one of the most misused words in tech marketing.
Encryption in transit means your data is protected while it travels from your phone to the server. This is the HTTPS padlock in your browser. It's standard. Every legitimate app does this. It protects you from someone intercepting your data on the wifi network. It does not protect your data from the company that operates the server.
Encryption at rest means your data is encrypted on the server's hard drive. If someone physically stole the server, they couldn't read the data. But the company still holds the encryption keys. They can decrypt your data whenever they want. For product improvements. For legal requests. For "research."
End-to-end encryption means the data is encrypted on your device before it ever leaves. The company never has the key. They can't read your entries. Not because of a policy. Because of math. Even if a government subpoenas them, even if they're hacked, even if a rogue employee tries to snoop, the data is unreadable.
Most wellness apps use encryption in transit and at rest. Very few use end-to-end encryption. The distinction matters more than any privacy policy.
How to Evaluate a Wellness App
Before you pour your inner life into an app, ask five questions.
Can the company read your entries? If they can decrypt your data, they can read it. Policies can change. Companies get acquired. Employees go rogue. The only reliable privacy guarantee is technical: end-to-end encryption.
Is your data used for AI training? Check whether the privacy policy reserves the right to use your content for model improvement. "Anonymized" doesn't mean safe.
What happens if the company is sold? Most privacy policies include a clause allowing data transfer during mergers or acquisitions. Your new data owner might have very different values.
Can you actually delete your data? Look for a clear data deletion mechanism. Not "request deletion" that takes 90 days. Actual deletion that you can verify.
Is the company funded by advertising? If ads are part of the revenue model, your data is the product. Full stop.
